Psalm Four

Have you ever been in a season of your life where it feels like everyone is conspiring against you? Maybe you're not on the run for your life and maybe no one is trying to usurp your kingdom, but you've probably experienced seasons where you felt excluded. Unwanted. Unlovable. Am I right? I know I have from time to time. That feeling of being surrounded by people but not actually accepted. That feeling of having so much to offer the body of Jesus, but being unwanted anyway. Many a Christian have lost themselves in bitterness and become divisive and angry because of the exact reality David was experiencing. And yet, what does David advise?

"Be angry, and do not sin; ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent. Offer right sacrifices, and put your trust in the Lord." - Psalm 4:4-5

Go ahead, feel what you feel. Be angry. Be hurt. Take a day and lay in the bed with your sweats and consider how badly you've been hurt. But then remember how worthy He is, put your big girl pants back on and lose yourself in worship. Remember who He is... and trust Him to take care of you.

It is so easy to spend our time crying out to God to fix our situations and to set Himself against those who hurt us, which is what makes David's example in this Psalm so beautiful. Instead of asking God to deal with his enemies, he rests in the fact that God has set him aside for Himself. He says, "In peace I will both lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety." - Psalm 4:8

As I read this Psalm, I am inspired to remember who I am, no matter what challenges I may face in life. Even if people hurt me or reject me or destroy my reputation, as they did to David, I will remember his advise. And even more so, I will remember his example.

"'There are many who say, "Who will show us some good? Lift up the light of your face upon us, O Lord!' You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound." - Psalm 4:6-7

God Himself, in all of His glory, has chosen me. Has called me worthy. Has loved me and predestined me to be intimate with Him. So others don't want me? Oh well, the highest voice in all of existence does. I'm cool, Yo!
